Kangra deputy commissioner Nipun Jindal on August 31 informed that the approval for the first phase under the Forest Conservation Act (FCA) has been received for the construction of a proposed heliport at Rakkar, Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh.

Jindal added that forest clearance was required for about 25 kanals of land and after the administration resolved the objections raised, the approval of stage one has been received. He said that after getting the approval of the second phase under the Forest Rights Act (FRA), the process of construction of heliport would be taken forward.

“The state government has decided to build heliports in each district headquarters, but heliports are proposed to be built at two places in Kangra, as it is being developed as the tourism capital of state. As per the instructions of chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, heliports will be constructed at Rakkar and Palampur in Kangra district,” the DC said.

1,180-capacity pilgrims' lodge in Bodh Gaya soon

The Gaya Ji Dham Dharamshala is proposed to be built on around 4.38 acre land of the local infectious disease hospital. Tourism department secretary Abhay Kumar Singh conducted an inspection of different sites in Gaya and Bodh Gaya ahead of the Pitripaksh fair and instructed the district administration to get the entire plot levelled, and the old and dilapidated structures demolished soon.

He said that for this, about 82 kanals of land in Chaudhary Saravan Kumar Agriculture University in Palampur has been transferred to the tourism department. “Approximately INR 9 crore will be spent in the construction of the heliport in Palampur and a hangar for helicopters will also be constructed at the selected place in Palampur,” Jindal said. He added that at Rakkar, the heliport will be built in 25 kanal land at a cost of about INR 6 crore. “The detailed project report is being prepared by the tourism department for the construction of the heliport in Palampur and the construction work will be done after getting forest clearance for Stage Two in Dharamshala. This would not only give a boost to tourism, but would also be useful in emergency situations. Additionally, these heliports can be used as evacuation sites during any natural calamity and provide relief in times of distress,” Jindal said.

“Apart from the construction of the heliport, the process of expansion of Kangra airport is also being taken forward with the aim of improving air services,” Jindal added.
