Domestic airlines in India have experienced a remarkable surge in passenger traffic during the first eight months of 2023, according to recent data released by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA). From January to August 2023, the airlines carried 1,190.62 lakh passengers, marking an increase of 38.27 per cent compared to the same period last year.
This surge in passenger numbers, said MoCA, reflects the industry’s resilience and its ability to recover from the challenges posed by the global pandemic.
The month of August 2023 alone witnessed a monthly growth rate of 23.13 per cent, with passenger numbers soaring to 148.27 lakhs. This surge in August passenger traffic also demonstrated the industry’s ongoing recovery and increasing confidence among travellers.
Besides this tremendous growth in passenger traffic, the overall cancellation rate for scheduled domestic flights in August 2023 was incredibly low at 0.65 per cent. During the same month, scheduled domestic airlines received a total of 288 passenger-related complaints, resulting in a complaint rate of approximately 0.23 complaints per 10,000 passengers carried.
MoCA stated that this combination of low cancellation rates and a low number of complaints showcases the industry’s unwavering commitment to prioritising customer satisfaction and delivering reliable and efficient services to passengers.
Lauding the impressive growth in the sector, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel, emphasised that this consistent growth is a testament to the collective efforts of airlines, airports, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The aim, he stated, is to foster a safe, efficient, and customer-centric aviation ecosystem. With numbers showcasing ideal growth, the Indian aviation industry remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring passenger safety and comfort while adapting to evolving travel demands and regulations. As air travel continues to recover, domestic airlines are poised to play a key role in facilitating economic growth and enhancing connectivity across India.
