Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel Jyotiraditya M. Scindia laid the foundation stone for Datia Airport in Madhya Pradesh. The airport’s strategic location will also facilitate the operation of flights connecting Khajuraho and Bhopal, thus boosting regional air travel, said Scindia.

The routes linking these cities have already been designated under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) UDAN, a scheme designed to enhance connectivity across the nation.

The development of Datia Airport is slated to cost approximately INR 50 crore, and its expected completion date is February 2024.

The plan encompasses several crucial elements, including the refurbishment of the existing 1810-meter runway, the establishment of a two-aircraft apron suitable for nineteen-seater planes, the construction of a 750-square-meter terminal building, and the addition of an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower. The terminal will be designed to comfortably accommodate up to 100 passengers during peak hours.

Opinion: India's aviation sector driving the growth story

As India’s aviation sector adapts to rising passenger demand, backed by expansion of domestic circuits and forecasts of soaring aviation growth, CAPA predicts that India could handle 1.3 billion passengers and operate 4,000 aircraft by 2043. There is a need to modernise aviation infrastructure, expand facilities, drive efforts to train and retain qualified professionals and more to accommodate growth effectively.

The conversion of the Datia airstrip into a full-fledged airport represents the fulfillment of a longstanding demand, said Scindia. The completion of the Datia airport will be a development that will bring about a transformative change and will also help to promote tourism in the region.According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the growth trajectory of air travel in Madhya Pradesh is undeniable, as noticed by the increase in aircraft movements. Over the years, the number of aircraft movements per week has surged from 506 in 2014 to 554 in 2021, and the momentum has only accelerated, reaching 956 at present. This 72.5 per cent increase compared to 2021 and a 89 per cent surge compared to 2014 underscores the dynamic growth in the aviation sector.
