CISF at Chennai airport to get 2D scanners

Passengers may not have to wait in long queues to enter terminals at Chennai airport in Tamil Nadu as CISF personnel will soon get 2D scanners to check barcodes on tickets at the entry gates as part of augmenting security.

Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) regional director S Kalyanraman said the move will help prevent unauthorised entry into the terminal. Similar facility has been introduced in many of the private-run airports in the country.

Chennai airport to modify terminals to add domestic flights

The arrival terminal on the ground floor will get three baggage conveyors. The immigration and customs counters and duty free shop will be removed to make the first floor ready for domestic departures. The airport will be able to handle 19 million passengers per year after the terminals are converted for domestic passengers. The present capacity is less than 15 million passengers per year.

Airports Authority of India and the BCAS will also introduce CTX X-ray machines that will generate 3D images for screening of hand baggage by the end of December, and body scanners in the coming months. Currently, hand baggage are being screened using dual view X-ray machines fitted with an automatic tray retrieval system which, to an extent, is preventing congestion at security check areas. On Monday, BCAS began a five-day aviation security culture week to create awareness among passengers and people who work in the airports to ensure aviation security. This means cooperating with the security staff, knowing what is permitted in the cabin, and checking in bags, packing your own bags, carrying gifts given by others and also staying vigilant.
